Santa is always watching. Isn’t that what we told our children growing up? Now, in this generation, there’s even an elf that flies back to Santa each night and gives a report. Well, we as school leaders and educators live in a very similar world. Someone is always watching. Whether it’s cameras, phone recordings, or on social media, someone is always watching.
In a former life of mine as a Division 1 basketball official, we used to review game footage very often, and I would look at my positioning, the calls I made, my body language, etc. While this is not a common practice among school administrators, we should have the mindset that we are always being watched, and always being recorded.
I have had several parents over the years record conversations on the phone, or in my office, without my knowledge. I have always been mindful of this and make sure that I conduct myself professionally and with empathy at all times as if there was a tape. As in my refereeing life, I would always want it to show me in a positive light with my words and actions.
So during this Christmas season, I remind you that Santa, as well as many others, are always watching us and we need to lead with that mindset. It is the world we live in today and that’s not going away, so conduct yourself as if there was a replay of your actions and words at all times.
My best to you this Christmas holiday season and new year! Continue to go out and change the world for the better.
