Whenever I travel to my kids’ games or tournaments, one of the things I like to do is get outside in between the events and see the local area. I’ll bring my exercise clothes, earbuds, and get away for a period of time. I love the exercise and being out of the loud congested areas.
This particular weekend I was in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It’s a beautiful city and transported me back to another point in time, seeing the carriages and horses running all over the place. It really made me think about things, and how different they once were.
I stopped to stretch near this creek when I noticed an interesting dynamic on both sides of the water flow passageway. One side had man-made concrete blocks that were put in place to hold back the land from collapsing into the water. The other side had trees with roots that ran horizontal, naturally holding back the landscape. I thought this was an interesting dichotomy. Natural supports versus artificial supports.
This also had me thinking about situations in my life, and my health on the same topic. What are the areas in my life where I am thriving on natural supports versus other areas where I may need some artificial supports. Let’s take sleep for example.
Getting my rest and getting to bed early in the evenings is something I continually work on. My brain is racing with to-do lists. What’s happening the next day? What didn’t I finish today? All the while trying to make sure I am present and spending quality time with my wife and family in those precious evening hours.
A few natural supports that I use are:
Having a routine.
Using similar timing.
Not drinking any fluids after 8 o’clock.
Not eating any food after 6:30 pm.
Laying out my clothes the night before.
These are all little things I do for myself to naturally support a good night’s sleep.
Some artificial supports that I use are:
A white-noise sound machine.
Earplugs if necessary if someone is running the wash or some other loud activities still happening in the house.
Putting my cell phone in another room when I go to sleep is another key one. Staying off the cell phone is extremely important.
Breathe right strips. If I am congesteted or really just want to focus on my breathing, these are great.
Just like the task of keeping the landscaping back for the waterway to flow through a mix of natural supports and artificial supports, I too have a mix of supports that I use for the very important task of sleep.
Use the tools around you to support the important things in your life. There are many natural supports out there. Take the time to research them, recognize them, and try them out to help you achieve some of the things you are looking for in your life.
