#ELBlog #233: Starfishing
Sometimes I push too much. Sometimes I go too long. And sometimes I overschedule things. This includes my family, who I try to include in a number of events while we’re traveling or on the road. As we’ve all learned, sometimes less is more and that’s still a work in progress for me!
Well, I did it again this past summer. We had a number of events in a row including a trip, some home improvements, and our daughter‘s sweet 16 which we hosted at the house. It was a beautiful event and we had an amazing time. Midway through the party, my wife said to me: “I’m going to starfish tomorrow.” I looked at her cross-eyed and said what? You’re doing what?
She said “I’m starfishing tomorrow.” And she took her arms and legs and splayed them out like a starfish. I asked what that meant? She said “I’m totally going to relax and do nothing. My brain needs a rest, my body needs a rest, and I just need to breathe and not plan for another event.”
I thought wow, that does sound refreshing. We wrapped up the party and sure enough on Sunday we both took some quiet time to just relax. I did literally as she suggested, spread out on the bed stretching my arms and legs out and breathing deeply. I did some meditation, some yoga, and even a short snooze. It all felt great.
A couple of days later my in-laws, the great Patricia and Eugene Grimes stopped over with a gift for my wife. We opened it and it was a starfish pillow! Perfect! Just what the doctor ordered.
This starfish stuffed pillow is a reminder to all of us in our family to take time to rest. Take time to breathe and just stop sometimes. Even now when I see it, just looking at it helps me to relax.
Thanks to my wife for once again providing an important ingredient not only for our own personal health, but also for the success and health of our family. Keep rolling friends and make sure you’re taking time in your lives to starfish!
