#ELBlog 245:
Send All The Shoes You Have
**This is an excerpt from an upcoming book I am working on with Jay Billy & Brian McCann. Jay is an awesome Principal in NJ and author of Lead with Culture & Brian is an amazing retired Principal from MA, spending his whole educational career at Case High, a student, teacher, and Principal.
We are writing a book together entitled HATS: Heartfelt Acts for Teachers, Students, and Staff that will be released spring 2023.
Hope you like this sneak peak.
There was a shoe company that sent two salespeople to two different remote islands looking to sell shoes to the natives. Each salesperson arrived at their separate locations and got to work. The first person, after being there just one day, called the company and said, “Come pick me up. This is a waste of time. There are a lot of people here but no one is wearing shoes.”
The second salesperson called shortly afterward, and enthusiastically asked to speak to the CEO of the company. Once connected, she yelled into the phone, “Send me everything you got. No one here wears shoes and there is a ton of opportunity here!”
Putting on this HAT (Heartfelt Act for Teachers, Students, & Staff:
This happens each day in schools, businesses, and organizations around the world. It is all about how we look at things, the lens in which we see the world. A heartfelt act for a teacher or student is believing in them. It is giving them a chance. Don’t we talk about growth scores all the time with kids? Teacher evaluations with test scores? A growth mindset, a positive outlook, and the E + R= O mentality. Event plus RESPONSE equals outcome.
It wasn’t that no one wore shoes on the islands, yet it was the salesperson’s response that produced the amazing outcome. Think about the student with low reading scores. How do we treat that young person? Is there a mindset that they’ll never read or do we look at it that there is great potential, an amazing opportunity? Look for these HATS in your organization and start selling those shoes!
