Every once, in a while, you read a book or watch a film/documentary that has a deep impact on you. You remember things that stand out. Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, and more all did that for me. I love the incredible impacts these book, movies, etc can make.
Make the Big Time Where You Are was a book I read that had one of those impacts.
Growing up, I would look at sports teams or organizations and always wanted to be the best. I wanted to be on the best teams and as I grew older. I wanted to make the team I was on the absolute best it could be. Whether it was high school, college, or now working in the Port Jervis school district, I want to make the big time where I am. That book had a profound impact on my thinking and my mindset. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, and when you focus on taking ownership, regardless of your title, and carrying the banner for your team or your organization you look at things differently. You look at things like an owner not a renter. There is greater care, and there is a deeper vision for the good of the organization and those in it.
What is that thing in your life that you want to make big time? What are ways that you can help carry the banner for your organization and help it shine? Here are a few simple things you can do”
- Celebrate what’s happening. We all have our ups and downs. Celebrate the wins when they happen.
- Nominate people for awards. Celebration is contagious and people should be recognized.
- Take care of small irritants. A piece of paper on the floor, a small crack in the wall, a little bit of graffiti. These are not heavy lifts, but compounded overtime they make a huge difference.
- Wear the swag and wear the gear. Put the sticker on your computer and your coffee mug. Represent your organization wherever and whenever you can.
- Speak highly of the people, place, and programs.
My mentor told me all the time to never miss an opportunity to let them see you shine. Well, I’ll take that mindset to the next level by saying never miss an opportunity to help your team or organization shine.
