Every time I’m with Dr. Rob Gilbert, I learn something. He is full of wisdom, knowledge, and experience. I love spending time with him because something just always registers. Recently, in a conversation with Dr. Rob, he said, “If you carry a birdcage around long enough, it will give you a bird.”
When Dr. Rob was doing a research paper at a college, he carried a folder around that said If you carry a bird cage around long enough… I don’t remember the content of the report he was working on, but what he shared was that he wrote it in a thick, black marker on the outside of the envelope. People would see it and ask him what it was. He would explain that it was his research paper, and then, of course, they would share something about it. He picked up a lot of information and a lot of resources for his paper just by following that process.
Then, he shared the birdcage quote. I love it, but isn’t it true? “If you carry a birdcage around long enough…somebody would give you a bird.” People do want to help you, and when you ask for help. Many times people are there to support you and help you on your journey. I’m not saying that you’re looking for handouts constantly, but there are people out there that will help you succeed. (Remember, we’re not just talking about birds here but the concept of helping others with resources, connections, opportunities, and more.) There are people out there who want to get rid of the bird they have, or some that have multiple birds that would be happy to give you one. There are even people who will buy you a bird just because you are on your journey of leadership and more.
