We started visiting colleges with my oldest daughter. I went to Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, many years ago, and I’ve always loved the Carolinas. My daughter is interested in heading south, so we did a tour from Western North Carolina to Wilmington Beach. One of our stops was High Point University in High Point, North Carolina. This University was absolutely stunning and extremely impressive. We loved everything about it. The beautiful landscaping and architecture, the branding of the school colors and slogans, and the intentionality about the experience for the students. It was all really cool.
One thing that especially caught my attention was the five-star steakhouse located on campus. The University wants to create well-rounded students who know how to carry themselves and act in all types of settings, including fine dining. They shared that many interviews and business meetings are completed around meals at fine restaurants. They want to prepare the students for those settings and train them appropriately. Students can eat at the restaurant. It counts as one meal swipe in their meal plan. They do, however, have to follow certain rules: a strict dress code, no cell phones, eating with the right utensils, and preparing for that business interview!
What an awesome concept! What forward thinking this school does to create these experiences for the kids. While we didn’t get to eat there, I was tremendously impressed with the whole thing, including the restaurant.
Kudos to the leadership staff at High Point University, including President Dr. Nido R. Qubein. His foresight and vision are certainly everywhere, with the school’s number one mindset: be extraordinary!
