In addition to the Success Hotline by my mentor and friend Dr. Rob Gilbert, I also listen to The Mental Performance Daily podcast by Brian Cain. Brian Cain is a former athletic director turned mental strength coach through the teachings and inspiration of Dr. Gilbert.
He said something the other day on his podcast that got my attention. I loved it. “A check-up, from the neck up.” Not only does it sound cool, it’s so important that we do it. But how do we do it? How do you mentally check the pulse of what’s happening in your mind? Here are a couple strategies:
- Number one: Find the quiet. Make some time for quiet in your life, whether it’s early in the morning before work, or maybe 10 minutes at lunch. Make time for the quiet.
- Number two: Scribe. What is it that you’re grateful for? What is it that you’re hopeful for? What are you doing that you love, and what do you need to stop doing? Write it down.
- Number three: What’s your passion? Are you doing things that relate to that passion? How does that passion help you serve others? When we can serve others and add value to them, it creates inspiration and positive energy in our own mind.
- Number four: Visualization. What do you hear during the quiet time? What do you visualize? Being the parent that you want to be for your children? Being that incredible employee, the one that everyone wants to work with. A bright smile and a warm experience with others. When we visualize ourselves doing those things, we are more likely to make them happen. When we see these things in our minds, they can become a reality. We can act that way. People have said to me that it feels fake. It’s not natural to me, and feels like I’m acting. Eventually, you’ll become the way you act. It becomes part of your person.
I’ll do checkups multiple times a day, including just driving in the car thinking. I might do a voice memo on my phone after having some quiet time in the car. If I can help you with a check-up from the neck up, don’t hesitate to reach out. Keep surviving and thriving, friends.
