I heard this great story on Talking with Dr. Terrie. Dr. Terrie Wurzbacher was a long time caller of Dr. Rob Gilbert and decided to start her own hotline. Talking With Dr. Terrie at 210-390-6100. Dr. Terrie has written a couple of books and I find her to be very inspirational with her messages. Here’s one for you:
Stephanie was four years old and often enjoyed watching her parents do puzzles on the big table. She’d watch them putting all the pieces on the table and take several days to complete it. When her parents weren’t at the table Stephanie would look at the pieces. She admired the bright colorful ones, but the dark ones with scary images caused her fear. She was afraid of them, so she would take them and hide them under the couch.
After several weeks, her parents started to notice the missing pieces and asked Stephanie about it. Stephanie came clean and shared what she was doing, hiding the pieces that she was afraid of. Stephanie learned an important lesson from this situation. In talking with her parents, she learned that all the pieces make up the picture of our lives. Not just the colorful ones, and not just the ones we enjoy. But all the pieces together, including the ugly ones and the ones we are afraid of.
If we try to put a picture of our life together and take out the scary pieces, there will be holes in our puzzle. There will be gaps. It’s all the pieces that make up the parts of our lives. This can relate to us in leadership as well. It’s not clean. It’s not easy. You have to go through the hard times to put a complete picture together of being a resilient leader!
Thank you, Dr. Terrie for sharing this great leadership story. Keep rolling, friends and keep surviving and thriving.
