Technology has increased the number of ways of communication these days. There are push notifications, text messages, email blasts, mailing lists, and so many more. There are so many different ways to engage with our families, all in the effort to build relationships.
I visit a lot of different schools and meet with a lot of different leaders. I am also a parent myself.
While it is good to receive all the information in an automated phone call, don’t lose the human touch. Let’s not forget the sound of a school leader’s voice or the tone in which they speak.
AI and computer automation allow for computer-generated voice calls home, and while it might be easy with the click of a button, I think we lose something there. The personal touch offers a lot. Whether it is directly from a teacher and their classroom, the superintendent, or maybe even a student leader, let’s continue to make school messages personal.
I’m not saying we need to do this all the time, and there are a lot of good reasons for systems that give families a quick text message with information. Pick your spots, and do it when you can.
Pop out a holiday greeting before a major holiday. Have the kids for the upcoming musical sing a song on the phone call. How about the girls from the championship softball team inviting people to the community celebration?
Even invite a young student or veteran teacher to give the welcome-back message for the first day of school.
Let’s keep school personal and not forget to have a personal touch, and all that we do.
