My wife and I recently got to spend some time in and around Houston, Texas. We were dropping our son off at an aerospace engineering summer program opportunity, and then headed to a nearby speaking engagement.
It’s wonderful for us when we can steal some time together in between events like this. We are both 50 years old, been married for 25 years, and still thoroughly enjoy capturing some time together. Just the two of us enjoying each other, wonderful activities, and good food.
After a Sunday morning stroll in the neighborhood of Montrose outside Houston, we stopped at Citizens, which was a nice little café for brunch.
We enjoyed lattes, a warm breeze and great conversation.
I ordered salmon and egg toast. On the menu it said it came on sourdough bread, but I asked for the multigrain instead, trying to just be a little bit healthier.

After about 10 minutes, the chef came out wanting to double check that change. His name was Ramon. We discussed the bread options and how it crisps while being toasted in combination with the food. He suggested I stick with the sourdough bread, which I did. He was tremendously friendly, and wanted to come out and just double check did I indeed make that change and if I wanted to stick with it. We had a conversation about food, culture, and the importance of getting it right.
I was so impressed with him that I immediately asked him if I could take his picture, and write this blog. He was thrilled at not only our interaction but the potential that this conversation could help and benefit others. We further spoke about leadership and positively impacting the lives of the people we serve.
Who would have ever thought a school leader from New York would have so much in common with a chef from Houston, Texas!

Ramon, thanks for your service and certainly your desire to get things right. Our experience as Citizens was just fantastic! I wish you the best on your journey and keep surviving and thriving.
If you’re in the Houston area, I highly recommend stopping by!
