I’m excited that I finally got my boating certification. We live near Lake Wallenpaupack, and the kids are now teenagers, so they always want to go and do something. My wife and I are always trying to get the kids together and capture those magical moments together. So what’s better than getting out on the lake? Well we’ve done that, and we’re excited about spending more time together out on the lake with family. While I was taking the boat certification training, the trainer said “now remember every time you dock it’s different. The conditions are always different, different wind, different tides and sways and different traffic. So always be alert that it is different each and every time.”
This message resonated with me. It made me think about my times at school, my speaking engagements and even special family dinners or game nights.
They are not the same, nor do I want to treat them as such. Every interaction with a person, a child at school, a speaking engagement at a different district, they’re all different and I want to treat them as such. There are all such different cultures. There are different expectations for each scenario, and I need to be focused and aware of those.
I’ve spoken in Baptist Church Way down south, and I’ve also spoken at happy hour in Las Vegas. Those are two very different engagements.
I’ve led the pep rally before the big game, and I’ve also spoken at a child’s funeral. Again, two very different engagements, but both public speaking events.
Let’s remember the good advice from my boating license trainer. It’s different every time and treat it as such!
